Merry and Bright

I don’t know if you have noticed but I’ve been really into making signs lately. It’s a new hobby of mine that I started doing in September and have found that I actually really enjoy it. We have a place called the “hatch pit”. The city provides a place to dump any tree clippings, wood, construction stuff, and sod. Well sometimes people dump pallets that are in pretty good shape. You can scavenge the wood area where the pallets are and so it’s free to take. Corey and I got quite a bit of wood from there to supply my new hobby. Corey has also enjoyed working on some wood projects of his own. I usually tell him I need a sign what size and he’ll put it together for me. He also made a wood box for a table center piece. It turned out pretty cool. Maybe I’ll post a picture of it some time. I saw this post on pintrest here. I decided I wanted one too and created an image that I wanted on my computer. Then I printed and transferred the image onto the sign and hand painted it. I’m so happy with the results. What do you think?

Addressed, stamped, and ready.

Addressed, stamped, and ready.

Back in November I had a blog post about sending Christmas cards. Here is the update. They are addressed, stamped, and sealed ready to go. It was quite a process this year. I had a lot of complaining from kids about taking a family photo. The cards aren’t the best looking but we still went with it. The icing on the cake was when I bought 60 stamps and lost them! Yes I lost the stamps. I looked everywhere and was unable to locate the stamps. That’s enough for me to give up and say I guess we weren’t meant to send cards out this year. No I’m determined to do it this year. No excuses. I went out and bought 40 more stamps and we are headed to the post office to post the mail. As long as nothing catastrophic happens on the way to the post office we are golden. If you get a card from me remember it wasn’t easy and there was a lot of effort to get them to you because we love you. On a related note I finished the “MERRY MAIL” sign and have it hung up ready to receive the cards for this year. I love how it turned out. It’ll be better than the string I had hanging up. I always had to keep hanging the string over and over again because it kept falling down. Can you believe it we already received one card! Yay! Someone is on the ball this year. Hope you have an easier time getting the cards out this year.

I love how this turned out.

Christmas Cards

Posted on

merrymail I know it’s early to be thinking about Christmas but this is the time I always start thinking about cards. I love getting Christmas cards and was thinking I would make a sign like the one on the left to hold the cards I receive this year. Although Each year the number of cards we receive reduces. I think only one of my siblings sends a card to us each year(hint hint to all you others). Is it really that hard to put something in the mail? I know the season gets super busy. Last year was the first and only year that we didn’t send any cards. It was silly really we just didn’t think ahead in time to get one together. I used to make handmade cards and my husband would write a family letter. That was really time consuming. Now we take a family photo upload them to our big box store and print out a bunch of cards. They even come with envelopes. It usually only cost around $11 dollars to print 30 cards. It really isn’t too hard. So no excuses this year. If you want a card from us this year send me a message with your address but know that if I send you one I expect one in return. It doesn’t have to be fancy it can be a note that just says Hi. The virtual cards or emailed cards don’t count. I can’t hang that on the wall and look at it everyday. Let’s see if I can fill my sign this year. I’ll post in December the finished product.

Old fence boards

IMG_20160509_133253976Back in May we had a major wind storm that blew a big portion of our fence down breaking some of the fence boards.  Instead of throwing them out I wanted to use them somehow. I asked my husband to make me a flat plank out of them so I could make it into a flag.

This is what he gave me. He even sanded it down for me.

This was perfect. I’ve seen the flags made out of pallets and I think they are cute but a little tacky with all the spaces and only a few stars on them. I’m not trying to offend anyone this is just my personal preference. I wanted something that looked closer to a real flag.

I started with white washing the whole board. I chose a white wash because I really liked the look of the grain of wood and wanted it to show through a little. We had some extra paint from the chicken coop my husband build a few months ago so that is the paint I used.

Then I cut out stars out of contact paper. I have a slice machine which made this easy. You could use a die cutter too. If you’re really dedicated you could cut them out by hand. I’ve also seen people stamp them on. I laid the stars out how I wanted them and then tediously peeled the backs off and stuck them to the board. I used a big craft stick to press them firmly on the board.

Next I went to home depot and got a sample can of dark blue paint for under $3. I did a wash on this paint too. 1 part paint to 2 parts water. I then applied it and wiped it off with a paper towel. I did this a couple of times until I got the look I wanted. I then waited for it to dry and took the stars off and the tape.

The blue paint bled a little into the white so I touched up a little with some white paint. My son thought I should leave a little of the blue paint on the stars because it gave it a rustic look so I did. Next I had to tape the border around the blue again to allow the red stripes to touch the blue. I measured and taped the 13 stripes. My planks height was 19 1/2 inches which made a nice 1 1/2 inch stripe for 13 stripes.

I used a wash on the red paint too. Again 1 part paint to 2 parts water.

After it dried I took the tape off and Voila it was done. The red bled somewhat into the white. I left it because I wasn’t that picky about it. It kind of left it looking a little rough. Over all I like how it turned out. Now I have a little decoration for the 4th of July!

Orange Marmalade

Posted on

About a month ago two cute girls came to my door selling a box of oranges for their dance club. I bought some and a few weeks after they were delivered. When I was a kid my grandpa Tiffany would buy a box of apples and a box of oranges for us for Christmas so I thought it fitting to have a box this year. I don’t know what my mom did with all the oranges. I do remember eating quite a few of them.  Maybe we did eat them all before they went bad. Well my little family doesn’t go through oranges that fast. When I looked in the box yesterday I noticed that they were starting to get soft. I need to use them and soon. I have never canned anything after November. Usually canning season starts in June and last until November and by that time I’m so tired of it that just looking at another jar makes me nauseas. I have to say it is a little weird to be canning at the end of December.

A few years ago my sweet husband made some orange marmalade. The problem is he used the whole orange including all the bitter whites. I’m not a huge fan of orange marmalade in the first place and his was just too bitter to use for anything. So today I set out to use some oranges and make some marmalade myself. I’ve come across a couple of recipes that call for orange marmalade but I never had any on hand so I couldn’t try them. Now I will have some ready to use!

I just followed the directions on the sure gel pack and a few hours later I have some nicely jarred marmalade. There were a couple of things that I did different.  I didn’t have 2 lemons so I only used one and added an extra orange. I don’t have a zester so I used my cheese slicer that I got in Sweden almost 16 years ago. It worked great! When I got done boiling the peals and the juice I didn’t have enough for the recipe so I juiced 5 more oranges to get enough. In total I used 10 oranges! I’m so glad to make something useful out of all those oranges.DSCF5884

Tomorrow is a new year and I can’t help but look back on the past year and be grateful. We had many things happen this year but the biggest was moving. When we moved we were really blessed when so many of our friends and neighbors stepped in and helped. I had friends help me paint, pack, lift, patch, and even had some give us dinner. This move was by choice. We just wanted a little bigger place to call home. I do love this home! I Also love all the wonderful people who helped make our move smoother. We do miss our old neighborhood and I actually find myself back there quite a bit. I still like to go walking with my friends and playing pickleball with them too. The kids also like to play with their old friends from time to time and their piano teacher is still there. I love that whenever I come to visit it feels like nothing has changed. They still welcome us with all their hearts. I love these guys! I’m excited about our new neighborhood too. So far we have had many plates of cookies and a couple of dinner invites. Everyone seems very kind here and I’m excited about making new friendships too. I wanted to thank all those who made my year last year a memorable one and I can’t wait to see what the new year brings. We’ll spend this evening with some friends ringing in the new year. I can’t think of a better way of spending it.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Day 12: Nativity

Merry Christmas Eve! Writing these posts has been really beneficial to me. I hope that I’ve been able to help reignite the Christmas spirit not only in myself but to those who have journeyed down memory lane with me. For my last post I’ve saved an important one to remember.

My grandmother loved to do ceramics. I’ve mentioned this in a previous post. She made this really neat nativity that my mom now has. My mom would put it on the piano and we would look at it. Unfortunately we were not so good at looking and not touching. The set now looks a little banged up. I think my mom has had to glue baby Jesus’ leg back on a couple of times. The donkey has lost at least one ear and I think the cow may be missing a horn. I’ve thought about replacing these items but it wouldn’t be the same because my grandmother had made them (Although if any of my siblings are wondering about a gift next year the name of the exact nativity is Duncan nativity). I’ve wanted a nativity to put under my tree for a while. Corey surprised me and bought me one earlier this month. It’s not the same as my mom’s but it reminds me of why we celebrate the season.

With this being my last post I thought this would be an appropriate ending. We need to remember the very first nativity. The night Christ was born. The true gift of love that was given to us by our own loving Heavenly Father. What an amazing time that would’ve been. To have seen the star. To have heard the angels and to have seen the baby lying in a manger. To know that someday he would be our salvation. He would be our ticket back home to our Heavenly Father. I pray that this Christmas Eve we remember Him and the wonderful gift he gave us. Have a wonderful evening and a Merry Christmas!

Day 11: Christmas Magic

You may be wondering what I mean by Christmas Magic. It’s that excited feeling you get. That extra glow you see in your tree, lights, and people you love. If you still don’t understand google it and look at the images. As we get older it gets harder and harder to have that feeling that extraordinary experience. I remember when it started to fade for me. Corey and I were newly married and travelling home for Christmas. On Christmas Eve my mom had to work. She handed me the stockings and goodies that go inside them and said “You’re in charge this year”. I guess a little of me still wanted to believe. I still liked to wake up Christmas morning and see the stockings full and the presents under the tree. Now I was in charge and there was no guessing how those things appeared on Christmas. It’s not that I believed in Santa or didn’t know where they came from, I guess I just liked how they just happened to be there the next morning. Since I’ve started my own family I’ve become Santa. I’ve had to come up with creative ways for me to keep that Christmas Magic alive. For example, writing this blog and reliving the memories has helped me capture some of this magic.

One year not so long ago I decided it was time.( if you’re reading this with young eyes/ears around you might want to stop) Time to tell my oldest the truth about Santa.  He was about 11 years old and kept asking all sorts of questions and saying things I didn’t want him to say in front of his little brother and sister. I took him aside and I told him how there was no Santa but there is the spirit of Santa. The spirit of santa is really the spirit of giving. I told him that we keep that spirit alive by serving and giving to others. I told him that he now has that responsibility to keep the spirit alive. Since, he has been super great at doing special things for his siblings in honor of that spirit. I wrestled with the feeling that I might be ruining that Christmas magic for my son by telling him about Santa but now I think it only strengthened him. He has asked if he could do the stockings. I said no! He’ll have plenty of years before he has to do that. This way he still gets to wake up on Christmas day and wonder a little.

I still struggle from year to year to have that excitement about Christmas I once had. I realize it doesn’t come that easily but it is achievable. We can find it in our memories. We can find it in our children. We can find it in serving one another. I think it is so worth the effort. Don’t you?

Day 10: Owyhee Toffee

This memory has a special place in my heart. I’m sure that all my brothers and sisters and cousins on my Fogg side know what I mean. You see my grandpa Fogg had a tradition of sending us this toffee in the mail every year. He had a special way of packaging it and even typing our address on the package with his type writer. He passed away when I was only 12. The interesting thing is his toffee still came each year after he passed. Wrapped in the same packaging typed with the same type writer. It was even signed with his handwriting. I loved this little reminder of him. I loved the idea that maybe just maybe he was still having fun with us. Later I came to realize that most likely it was one of my mother’s siblings who was sending these candies. My grandpa was a pharmacist and had a stamp with his name on it. My mom couldn’t remember who it was that inherited his typewriter and stamp and it became a sort of game to figure it out. The toffees did eventually stop coming I can’t say why but it was sad when we no longer saw that familiar package under the tree. I am glad that I have the gospel in my life. I know that despite my grandfather passing away I will eventually see him again. I know that he will be smiling and he’ll recount those fun times we had together. I often think of those that have passed before me and wonder how they feel I’ve done in life. I guess this is a way I keep myself in check. To help me do the right things. This season is hard for many who have lost. There is hope in the very reason we celebrate Christmas. There is hope in Christ! May you find peace and hope in your heart this season.

Day 9: New traditions

Corey and I have been married for 16 1/2 years now. Along the way we have started many new traditions in our family. One is the tradition of watching the Polar Express. This is my new favorite Christmas movie. I love the music and the message. We pick a night before Christmas and pop some pop corn and we all watch it together. Another new tradition is that of the Elf on the shelf. I know cheesy right? I saw this on pintrest a few years ago and thought how fun it would be to do with my kids. Preston is of course too old to believe but he likes to help play the part of moving the elf. Our elf doesn’t do mischievous things he just watches. We move him from night to night and the younger kids love to try and find him. Last year my mom sent us another elf. This one is a little plush soft elf. I let the kids take turns hiding this one. The original elf has one rule you can’t touch him. It is nice that grandma sent this new one that the kids can hug and touch. I wonder when my kids get older what traditions are going to become most important to them. What are they going to remember and what are they going to carry on with their own families? I guess for now I’ll just enjoy the moments we have now.

Day 8: Christmas Bells

In my mom’s Christmas tree ornaments she has some bells.  These are special bells because my grandma Fogg made them. I remember one time my mom sat down with us and tried to teach us how to make these. I think my mom had to first sit down and figure it out herself. They are simple bells made of beads. Last year, while looking at pintrest, I came upon a pattern for the same bells. My sisters and I always admired those bells so I thought for a great gift I would make each sister a set of 10. I have three sisters. That means I had to do at least 30 bells. I wanted a set myself that would make 40! That’s a lot of bells. I sneakily asked my sisters what their color scheme was on their trees. I started making them in November and had them done by the first week in December. I actually made 46 bells. I decided that each of my sisters should have a bell the original color of grandma Fogg’s bells so we could each have a little of her with us on Christmas. I have three of that color so someday I can hand them down to my kids. Do you have any special ornaments that remind you of a wonderful time in your life?
