Day 5: Sticky Buns

This is a fairly new tradition for me. This is one of Corey’s family’s traditions. I guess we have been married for over 16 years so it’s not so new to me anymore. Corey’s Grammy Rosa had a wonderful sticky bun recipe. She handed it down to Corey’s mom and they make it every Christmas morning for breakfast. We love this tradition. The only problem with it is we usually don’t remember until 8:00pm on Christmas Eve that we need to make them. Then we are up until midnight making sticky buns. The original recipe makes 24 rolls, however, that is way to much for my little family so this recipe only makes 12. Hope you enjoy!

Sticky Buns

3/4 Cup warm milk

1/4 Cup sugar

1 tsp salt

1 egg

1/4 Cup shortening

3 1/2 Cups flour

1/4 Cup warm water

1 Tbsp Yeast

pinch of sugar

Mix warm water, pinch of sugar, and yeast in a small bowl and set aside. Combine 1 1/2 Cups of flour and remaining ingredients and beat hard. Add 1-2 more cups of flour and mix until dough can be kneaded. Knead dough 10 minutes. Cover and let rise and punch down twice.

Make Syrup: Combine 6 Tbsp butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3 Tbsp corn syrup or honey in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Pour into a 9×13 pan.

Roll dough into a 9×12 rectangle. Spread with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and raisins if desired. Set rolls in syrup. Let rise until doubled. Bake at 375º for 15-20 minutes. Slightly undercook if not eating right away and finish cooking in morning. Pans must be inverted while syrup is hot in order to remove from pan.

Day 4: Wrapping the door

One year my mom got the idea in her head that we needed to wrap our front door. She would buy some wrapping paper and we literally wrapped the door. We took the roll of paper and wrapped it around a couple of times and then stuck a big red bow on the outside. It looked pretty cute but it wasn’t easy to wrap. In my area now if I tried that the paper would get ruined with the wind and snow. My mom continued doing that for years. I’m not sure if she still does it now.

Another crazy idea my mom had was making paper lanterns. She would buy brown paper sacks and trace Christmas shapes in them. She told all of us we had to do at least two. It wasn’t that easy. If we had 5 people in our family we had to cut out at least 10 sacks. She would then fill the bottom of the sacks with cat liter or sand and add a candle. On Christmas Eve she set them all out along the drive and walkway and lit them all up.  They were pretty but I’m not sure they were really all that safe. Most of us didn’t like cutting out the shapes so there were some years that my mom would end up cutting out many of them on her own. That tradition didn’t last long. I think you can now buy sacks to line your drive with and even put in battery operated candles.

Day 3: Ceramic Christmas Tree

One of my favorite decorations growing up was a ceramic Christmas tree that my grandma Fogg made. My Grandma passed away when I was only 3 years old. When she died my mom inherited some of her Christmas decorations. My grandma used to make a lot of ceramic items. She had a good friend who had the forms and the firing oven to do these crafts. She painted the tree. It looks similar to the one pictured down below. This tree had a light in it with little red birds all around it. It also played music. Silent Night was the song it played. I remember as a child turning out all the lights in the living room and turning on the Christmas lights on the tree and the ceramic Christmas tree. My sisters and I would roll our blankets up like they were sleeping bags and we would pretend we were going camping. I would twist the key on the music tree and we would lay our blankets on the floor and pretend we were in the forest listening to beautiful music. My mom still has the tree. She has since had to replace some of the birds because her cats like to sneak off with them but it is one of the few items we as kids didn’t destroy. That song is still one of my favorite Christmas songs.

Day 2: Christmas Trees

Growing up we always had a real Christmas Tree. The smell was amazing! We would lay the skirt around the bottom and put all kinds of ornaments on it. We also have always had cats. For some reason the tree would become cat territory. The cats would nestle themselves under the tree, usually in the back among the presents, and sleep there.  I don’t know if it was the smell of the outdoors, the unlimited supply of pine infused water, or the dangling tree ornaments that attracted them to it.  I do know that you were just about guaranteed a cat jumping out of the tree and making a mad dash away from kids who came to look at the presents. In the meantime, scaring the crap out of us kids.

Even in college my roommates and I insisted on a real tree. We had a nice friend drive us to Walmart and we bought what we could with what little money we had. It was our Charley Brown tree. It was more of a branch than a tree. We elevated it on a box, that we wrapped, just to make it look a little bigger. It did the job and had an amazing smell too.

Since getting married we have only had the artificial trees.  More cost efficient and pre-lit so no more hassle with lights. The one thing I miss was the amazing smell a real tree brings into the home. One year I found these sticks that you put on your tree and they smell like pine or fur or whatever tree smell you wanted. What I didn’t anticipate was how strong that smell would be.  I hung 3 or 4 around the tree and within an hour my house was over run with the smell of pine.  It was too strong.  So I took all but one down.  The smell was still too much. I was determined I would get use to it and left it up.  I think that was the stinkiest Christmas we ever had. I won’t be doing that ever again.  Maybe since we have a pine tree now I’ll try taking a cutting and putting it somewhere in our home just so I can have that amazing smell again.

Our tree this year.

A couple of years ago I did a 12 days of Christmas memories blog posts. I really enjoyed it and it really helped me feel the Christmas spirit. I’ve decided to do it again. This is going to be more difficult because I used 12 of the best but easiest ones to remember before. So coming up with 12 new ones will be a challenge. You are welcome to review the previous posts from a few years ago.

Day 1: Bubble lights

Our Christmas tree had these bubble lights on them. When you turned the lights on at night it would take a while but they would start to bubble. I remember just staring at those lights for the longest time. I loved them. I think you can still buy bubble lights but they are probably safer and more energy efficient. The ones I remember actually got pretty warm and probably weren’t the safest thing to put on the tree. I also remember a few of the tips breaking from them and water leaking everywhere. They were fun for the years we did have them.bubblelights

New Home New School

Well we are at it again.  A new school year. We just recently moved and so this year was met with a lot of anxiousness. All three kids are starting in a new school.  They are all very nervous.  Sophia is starting 2nd and will probably do the best at adjusting. Levi who is starting 5th grade will do alright but we may have a few days of tears. I’m a little worried about Preston. He starts 8th grade.  8th is already hard enough to find where you fit in.  I hope he makes some friends quickly so he can have a better experience.

So much time!

Now that all my kids are in school I’ve had time to finish some projects that have been on my to do list.  A couple of years ago I made Sophia a couple of skirts to wear to church.  Recently I’ve noticed she has gotten much bigger and the skirts are now above her knees.  I’ve been meaning to make her some new ones and now with some extra time I was able to make her not just one but 4! I went to the local fabric store and looked in their scraps and discount bins.  I was able to find some pretty cute material. Then I looked up on Pintrest the link to the pattern.  Here it is if you are interested in trying one yourself. http://www.scatteredthoughtsofacraftymom.com/2012/03/simple-skirt-tutorial-with-3-options.html

This is a very simple pattern and it only took me about an hour for each skirt.  I love how quickly they came together.  Now Sophia will have a skirt to wear for every week (unless there are 5 Sundays).  She is supper excited about them. I think they are so cute I need to figure out how to make one for me.

Back to School

DSCF5820I know facebook is inundated with photos of kids going back to school.  It’s a tradition that will continue here and until there are no more kids going back to school.  Today was a milestone in our families lives.  Our youngest started 1st grade and is for the first time going to school all day.  Also our oldest has started junior high. In years past I couldn’t wait for school to begin but this year is different for some reason.  I didn’t want summer to end and  I have mixed feelings about my youngest being at school all day.  I took the two youngest to school so they would know where to line up.  As I saw Sophia leave I tried really hard to be strong and blink away the tears.  I didn’t let them come until I was well on my way to the car.  I didn’t think I would be one of those parents who couldn’t hold it together but here we are with wet cheeks.  The new school year has begun and so has all the craziness.

IMG_20140627_092357447Wow! 9?! I can’t believe it.  Levi is so sweet.  He loves to help me out around the house and be my helper.  If I give him a list of things to do he does them without hesitation.  He is a very active boy.  Has been since he was a baby.  He started walking when he was 9 months old and hasn’t stopped moving since.  He is very sensitive to what is going on around him.  When we watch movies together he will often get really upset at the sad parts and I’ll have to sit and hug him until he calms down.  His little sister looks up to him and most of the time he teaches her some really neat things.  Other times he can be a little mischievous and  get his sister to do things she knows she shouldn’t, like jumping on the furniture. He loves to camp with his dad.  When we go hiking as a family he is always in the front leading the way.  When he gives me a kiss on the cheek he makes sure it’s nice and slobbery. I love this little guy (who isn’t really little anymore). Happy Birthday Levi!

Mommy and little girl.

Mommy and little girl.

Can you believe it?! It was six years ago that I received one of the greatest blessings a mom could ever get.  I was blessed with my little girl.  Where has time gone?  I wish I had the ability to freeze time so she would stop getting older.  Sophia and I have a special bond.  She is always ready for a hug.  I love the kisses she blows as she gets on the bus to go to school.  She was so excited this morning.  She got up and dressed then climbed back into bed.  When I came to wake her she threw the covers off and said “I’m already dressed.”  She is always so happy in the morning.  Ready with a smile and a hug.  She is our little humming bird.  You can hear her humming from a block away.  She hums all day long.
