12 Days of Christmas Memories Part 2

Day 5: Sticky Buns

This is a fairly new tradition for me. This is one of Corey’s family’s traditions. I guess we have been married for over 16 years so it’s not so new to me anymore. Corey’s Grammy Rosa had a wonderful sticky bun recipe. She handed it down to Corey’s mom and they make it every Christmas morning for breakfast. We love this tradition. The only problem with it is we usually don’t remember until 8:00pm on Christmas Eve that we need to make them. Then we are up until midnight making sticky buns. The original recipe makes 24 rolls, however, that is way to much for my little family so this recipe only makes 12. Hope you enjoy!

Sticky Buns

3/4 Cup warm milk

1/4 Cup sugar

1 tsp salt

1 egg

1/4 Cup shortening

3 1/2 Cups flour

1/4 Cup warm water

1 Tbsp Yeast

pinch of sugar

Mix warm water, pinch of sugar, and yeast in a small bowl and set aside. Combine 1 1/2 Cups of flour and remaining ingredients and beat hard. Add 1-2 more cups of flour and mix until dough can be kneaded. Knead dough 10 minutes. Cover and let rise and punch down twice.

Make Syrup: Combine 6 Tbsp butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3 Tbsp corn syrup or honey in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Pour into a 9×13 pan.

Roll dough into a 9×12 rectangle. Spread with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and raisins if desired. Set rolls in syrup. Let rise until doubled. Bake at 375ยบ for 15-20 minutes. Slightly undercook if not eating right away and finish cooking in morning. Pans must be inverted while syrup is hot in order to remove from pan.
