After 2 years and 4 months Preston is excited to announce that he finally got his braces off! I hope we get to see him smile a little more often now. He is excited to eat some of his favorite things he hasn’t been able to eat. Corn nuts is top on that list along with caramel and raspberries! While he had braces on he ate a lot of stuff he shouldn’t like popcorn and hard candies. I would catch him putting a hard candy in his mouth and he would always tell me “I’m just going to suck on it”. He is getting used to the slimy feeling of having the braces off. He hasn’t told any of his friends. He wants to see how many notice. Once he told me a friend of his got their braces off and he didn’t notice for three days until the friend pointed it out to him.

Merry and Bright
Posted onI don’t know if you have noticed but I’ve been really into making signs lately. It’s a new hobby of mine that I started doing in September and have found that I actually really enjoy it. We have a place called the “hatch pit”. The city provides a place to dump any tree clippings, wood, construction stuff, and sod. Well sometimes people dump pallets that are in pretty good shape. You can scavenge the wood area where the pallets are and so it’s free to take. Corey and I got quite a bit of wood from there to supply my new hobby. Corey has also enjoyed working on some wood projects of his own. I usually tell him I need a sign what size and he’ll put it together for me. He also made a wood box for a table center piece. It turned out pretty cool. Maybe I’ll post a picture of it some time. I saw this post on pintrest here. I decided I wanted one too and created an image that I wanted on my computer. Then I printed and transferred the image onto the sign and hand painted it. I’m so happy with the results. What do you think?
Mail Time
Posted onBack in November I had a blog post about sending Christmas cards. Here is the update. They are addressed, stamped, and sealed ready to go. It was quite a process this year. I had a lot of complaining from kids about taking a family photo. The cards aren’t the best looking but we still went with it. The icing on the cake was when I bought 60 stamps and lost them! Yes I lost the stamps. I looked everywhere and was unable to locate the stamps. That’s enough for me to give up and say I guess we weren’t meant to send cards out this year. No I’m determined to do it this year. No excuses. I went out and bought 40 more stamps and we are headed to the post office to post the mail. As long as nothing catastrophic happens on the way to the post office we are golden. If you get a card from me remember it wasn’t easy and there was a lot of effort to get them to you because we love you. On a related note I finished the “MERRY MAIL” sign and have it hung up ready to receive the cards for this year. I love how it turned out. It’ll be better than the string I had hanging up. I always had to keep hanging the string over and over again because it kept falling down. Can you believe it we already received one card! Yay! Someone is on the ball this year. Hope you have an easier time getting the cards out this year.
Snow!
Posted onYay it’s the first day of December! We woke up with this sight to see.
2 1/2 inches of snow. First time this year I’ve had to shovel. It’s been snowing off and on for the past week but it always warms up enough to melt. This time I think it’s here to stay. Here in Eastern Idaho we usually start getting snow in October but not this year. We have been warmer than usual which I’ve enjoyed because it has allowed me to bike and walk all November. I guess it’s time to dust off those sleds, wax those skis, and warm up that hot cocoa because winter is here! What are some of your favorite winter time activities?
Christmas Cards
Posted onI know it’s early to be thinking about Christmas but this is the time I always start thinking about cards. I love getting Christmas cards and was thinking I would make a sign like the one on the left to hold the cards I receive this year. Although Each year the number of cards we receive reduces. I think only one of my siblings sends a card to us each year(hint hint to all you others). Is it really that hard to put something in the mail? I know the season gets super busy. Last year was the first and only year that we didn’t send any cards. It was silly really we just didn’t think ahead in time to get one together. I used to make handmade cards and my husband would write a family letter. That was really time consuming. Now we take a family photo upload them to our big box store and print out a bunch of cards. They even come with envelopes. It usually only cost around $11 dollars to print 30 cards. It really isn’t too hard. So no excuses this year. If you want a card from us this year send me a message with your address but know that if I send you one I expect one in return. It doesn’t have to be fancy it can be a note that just says Hi. The virtual cards or emailed cards don’t count. I can’t hang that on the wall and look at it everyday. Let’s see if I can fill my sign this year. I’ll post in December the finished product.
In memory of Grandma Eve
Posted onEarly this morning my family said goodbye to a special person in our lives. My grandma Eve has been a great influence in my life. We were fortunate to live close to her while growing up. This allowed us to spend time with her and really get to know her. She loved to travel. She has probably been around the world a couple of times. I always looked forward to the post cards and letters she would send from the various places she would travel to. She didn’t always have an easy life. She was one of 12 children and grew up in Ohio. When she was 20 years old her father passed away leaving many younger siblings at home. The state of Ohio placed many of her younger sisters into state custody because they didn’t believe that her mother could raise all those children. My grandma took in her little sister, Great Aunt Kay. Aunt Kay lived with her for many years. She married my grandpa Tiffany in 1943. After having two children they divorced when my dad was a kid. She remarried to John Stubstad and had my Aunt. She later divorced and married 2 more times. I thought I was lucky because I had 4 grandpas. I now realize these were probably very trying times in her life. I remember spending time with her in her home. We often would get to spend a couple of weeks with her during the summer. On one of these visits I remember her tucking me into bed and asking me if I had said my prayers. I was pretty young at the time and was a little confused. I knew we said prayer at meal time and as a family before we went to bed but I had never said my own prayer before bed. She took the time to teach me a very important lesson about personal prayer. I will always be so grateful for the faith of this woman. I loved going to grandmas. She kept an immaculate home. I felt at peace while I visited her. We would spend Thanksgiving and Christmas at her home. She would make a huge feast. We all loved her homemade rolls. After dinner she loved playing games. The most recent one I remember playing with her was dominos. Although I think her favorite was scrabble but because of the competitive nature of the game it was banned from our family functions. While I was a student at BYU I took a family history class. One of my assignments was to talk to a grandparent about their history. Every chance I could I asked my grandma about her life. One day she handed me something that I will always cherish. She gave me a copy of her testimony and her conversion story along with a few of her favorite scriptures. It wasn’t long after that that she started to lose her memory. I’m grateful that I was able to learn more about her before it was too late to ask those questions. The last 10 years has been a struggle. She slowly lost her memory until she no longer recognized who we were. I still enjoyed my visits with her even though I knew she would not remember them. She was an amazing person and I’m lucky that I got to call her grandma. She passed with my dad and mom by her side along with most of my siblings. I didn’t get to be there with her for her last moments but am grateful for being able to see her this past summer. I’m comforted to know that through the gospel of Christ I will get to see her again. The next time I see her I know she’ll recognize me and I know it will be a joyous meeting.
First Day of School 2016
Posted onWe did it! We survived the first day of school! All the kids had a good day at school and are excited to get the new year started. Now that it’s the end of the day we are all a little tired but in good spirits. Sophia started 3rd grade this year. I love this little girl. She always has a song in her head and a smile on her face. Levi started 6th grade. This is his last year of elementary school. This guy is my sensitive helper boy. He always knows just what I need and is willing to lend me a hand. Preston started his freshman year in high school. Today he was the one who was the most tired when he got home. He is a very bright boy and loves spending time with his friends. I love these kids of mine.
The Week Before School Goal 10
Posted onThe week before school goal 10: Since today is the last day of summer vacation our goal is to have some fun. We usually go to a drive in theatre but the movies playing tonight aren’t really kid friendly. So we will try a matinee at the local theatre. Our goal is to spend time with the kids and enjoy freedom for a day.
The Week Before School Goals 8 & 9
Posted onThe week before school Goal 8: As I’ve said before I’m not a morning person so making a big nutritious breakfast for my kids before school is not on my mind in the morning. Usually it’s cold cereal. I like to make some things to go into the freezer to give a kids a better option for breakfast. Yesterday I made some french toast sticks. I get the big texas toast and make french toast than cut them into strips. I’ll freeze them so then my kids in the morning can just grab a few and stick them in the microwave and wallah yummy breakfast. Today I’m making breakfast burritos. These freeze really well. It takes about a dozen scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, & cheese. I’ll scramble the eggs until they are just a little runny and then layer in a tortilla egg, hashbrown, bacon, and cheese. Roll them up and wrap them in saran wrap put them in a ziplock freezer bag and put them in the freezer. To heat them up we just unwrap them stick them on a plate and microwave for 2 mins turning half way through. I also made chocolate chip cookie dough this week and portion it out and froze that for the after school snacks.
The week before School Goal 9: Haircuts! I usually cut my kids hair at the beginning of summer and then let it grow all summer. By the time school starts they all really need a good haircut. I’ll probably take Sophia to a salon to get hers done because I’m not that familiar with cutting girls hair. The trick for this goal to be accomplished is convincing my boys that they need a haircut. My 14 year old is going to be especially tricky. Did I mention that I hate cutting hair and getting it all over and having to clean it up? Another reason this is going to be a difficult one to accomplish.
Goal 6 update
Posted onI finished goal #6 Here are the results. I also finished with goal #7 and I can finally sit down and relax for a little while.
