Garlic

Garlic

I find garlic to be one of the easiest things to grow.  My husband and I started growing garlic a few years ago and we have kept doing it since.  We use garlic for so many things and it’s nice to always have fresh garlic around.

Growing garlic started with a trip to the grocery store.  While buying some garlic at the store we were curious about growing it in our own garden.  So we bought a couple of heads of garlic and separated the cloves and planted them in the garden just to see what would happen.  You plant garlic in the fall just like you would any type of bulb (ie tulips).  In the spring we were surprised to see garlic sprouting up.  It was great.  The garlic we bought from the store worked but the bulbs when harvested were smaller than what you bought at the store.  The next year we kept some of our bulbs that we had harvested and planted them again.  We also went to our local food co-op and bought some garlic that someone had grown on their farm locally.  It was amazing the difference in size each variety had.  The locally grown garlic was much larger than the grocery store.  This year we just planted some of our bulbs from last and it’s doing great.  I suggest buying the garlic from your local farmers market or co-op if you want to plant.  I tried buying from the local garden store and it was expensive ($4 dollars a bulb)  The co-op was only selling it for $1.00 a bulb.  Now we have an unlimited supply of garlic.  I planted about 6 bulbs of garlic which for us yields about 24 bulbs in the spring.  So that leaves us with 18 bulbs to use during the year.  The garlic when stored correctly last until your next harvest or until you consume it all.

Garlic is known to have many medicinal properties.  Garlic is great for your heart and helps regulate blood sugar levels.  There are a lot of reasons you should grow garlic.  Not only is it good for your health but it taste good too.  We use it in sauces, salsas, Asian foods, mix it with olive oil and use as a dip.  The possibilities are unlimited.  One down fall of garlic is that it can cause some really bad halitosis.  Also if you eat a lot of garlic your sweat could have a garlic odor.  I happen to like the smell of garlic but most people don’t.  Garlic is hard to smell on other people when you yourself have been eating garlic so if you’re worried about the smell just make sure everyone else is eating it too.

my garden

I love gardens.  I don’t claim to be an expert on gardening although I would like to be one someday.  I think gardening is a life long project.  You are always learning more.  Everyone has their own opinion on how gardening should be done.  I think it doesn’t matter if you are a patio gardener, square foot gardener, or a row gardener as long as you love what you’re doing and are somewhat successful at it than you’re on the right path to becoming an expert. Every year we try something different in our garden.  Some things work and somethings don’t it is always a learning experience. I love the feeling you get when you walk out into your garden and can see the results of your hard work.  I’m hoping to share with you information about my garden and what I’ve planted this year.  Not only what I’ve planted but how these things can be used when harvested.  Of course I expect you to do the same.  Tell me what works for you and what doesn’t.  Tell me what you’ve done with the produce you get. I think this will be a fun learning experience.  Here are the things we have planted in the garden  so far this year.  I’ll hopefully blog about each one.

Vegetables: garlic, peas, lettuce, spinach, radishes, green peppers, hot peppers, green beans, carrots, corn, pumpkins, cucumbers, onions

Fruits: tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, apples

Herbs: chives, Italian parsley

p8050001I’ve started making a quilt for Sophia.  Corey’s mother made a very beautiful quilt for her.  I’ve decided, with potty training,  I don’t want to ruin the wonderful quilt his mother made with all the washing it will have to go through.  So I’ve taken some of my scrap material and made some squares for a quilt.  So far it’s just squares but soon to be a quilt worthy of washing over and over (meaning if it gets ruined I don’t care).  Here is a picture to give you an idea of what it will look like.  I wish my mom lived closer and I could borrow her quilting frame to put it together.  Maybe I can convince Corey to make me one.   What do you think?  When I finish I’ll post another picture.

Pay It Forward Fun Run

Posted on

A few months ago I started to run with my friend Andrea about once a week just so she would have a running buddy.  She started to run in a bunch of races and every time one would come up she would ask if I wanted to join.  My reaction was always a hearty laugh and a resounding no.  I would always say “Why should I pay to run my butt off when I can do it for free.”  You see I’ve never been a great runner.  I think the most I’ve ever run was 1 1/2 miles and that was over 10 years ago with my roommates in college.  Andrea was persistent and she finally convinced me to run.  So I started to train with her and Melanie 2 1/2 weeks ago.

This morning, after a very restless night, I got up at 6:30 am started to get ready.  Dropped the kids off at a friends and picked up the girls for the run.  We arrive to a very hot and muggy 26 degrees (yes that is sarcasim).  As we wait for the race to start our fingers and toes slowly go numb.  At this point I don’t even know if I can feel my legs let alone run on them.  Finally the call to line up “ready, set, go”  We set off at a pace that I know will kill me after the first 1/2 mile.  I think to myself, did I leave my legs behind?  We ran a 3 loop course.  That’s where you run 1 loop 3 times.  I start to feel my fingers and toes after the 2 time around.  Last lap I hardly feel like I’m moving I think I’ll be lucky to make it in 35 min.  Oh and don’t forget to smile for the camera (thanks Makenzie).  Finally the last stretch.  Can that be right?  The clock it must be broken.  It’s coming up on 27 min.  Wow I thought I was doing horrible.  Finish time 27:11.  I feel so proud of myself I can’t believe I finished.  Here comes the balloon popper.  Someone tells us that the course was only 2.8 miles.  Bummer but still well within my goal of 30 min or less.  We also had a raffle afterward and I won a $5 gift certificate to Jamba Juice.  My friend Andrea got a months worth of free tanning.  She gave it to Melanie.  Over all out of 90 people I placed 38.  Andrea placed 33.  Melanie did the best out of all of us and placed 20.  It was a cold but fun race.  I can’t say I’ll do it again though.  I still think I can run my butt off for free and get the same results.

I must be crazy

Okay so we are having guest come and visit soon and I wanted to have the house look nice.  So I decided what a better time to paint the hall, entry, and living room.  Yes you’re right I must be crazy.  I started last night by sanding and cleaning walls.  I thought I could get them all done but in the process of doing the hall one of the walls decided it wanted to shed pratically all of it’s old paint.  Corey and I were up until midnight scraping the paint off.  So I still have the entry and living room to do.  Then I need to paint and I would like to get at least two coats on the wall and don’t forget the trim too.  Oh and by the way I can only do it when the kids are asleep otherwise we could end up with some pretty art work everywhere.   When does this need to be done?  8 days AAAAAHHHHH!! I MUST be crazy.
