{"id":733,"date":"2011-07-03T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2011-07-03T16:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/?p=733"},"modified":"2011-06-26T20:40:23","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T03:40:23","slug":"garlic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/?p=733","title":{"rendered":"Garlic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_734\" style=\"width: 145px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/garlic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-734\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-734\" title=\"garlic\" src=\"http:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/garlic-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"89\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/garlic-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/garlic.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garlic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I find garlic to be one of the easiest things to grow.\u00a0 My husband and I started growing garlic a few years ago and we have kept doing it since.\u00a0 We use garlic for so many things and it&#8217;s nice to always have fresh garlic around.<\/p>\n<p>Growing garlic started with a trip to the grocery store.\u00a0 While buying some garlic at the store we were curious about growing it in our own garden.\u00a0 So we bought a couple of heads of garlic and separated the cloves and planted them in the garden just to see what would happen.\u00a0 You plant garlic in the fall just like you would any type of bulb (ie tulips).\u00a0 In the spring we were surprised to see garlic sprouting up.\u00a0 It was great.\u00a0 The garlic we bought from the store worked but the bulbs when harvested were smaller than what you bought at the store.\u00a0 The next year we kept some of our bulbs that we had harvested and planted them again.\u00a0 We also went to our local food co-op and bought some garlic that someone had grown on their farm locally.\u00a0 It was amazing the difference in size each variety had.\u00a0 The locally grown garlic was much larger than the grocery store.\u00a0 This year we just planted some of our bulbs from last and it&#8217;s doing great.\u00a0 I suggest buying the garlic from your local farmers market or co-op if you want to plant.\u00a0 I tried buying from the local garden store and it was expensive ($4 dollars a bulb)\u00a0 The co-op was only selling it for $1.00 a bulb.\u00a0 Now we have an unlimited supply of garlic.\u00a0 I planted about 6 bulbs of garlic which for us yields about 24 bulbs in the spring.\u00a0 So that leaves us with 18 bulbs to use during the year.\u00a0 The garlic when stored correctly last until your next harvest or until you consume it all.<\/p>\n<p>Garlic is known to have many medicinal properties.\u00a0 Garlic is great for your heart and helps regulate blood sugar levels.\u00a0 There are a lot of reasons you should grow garlic.\u00a0 Not only is it good for your health but it taste good too.\u00a0 We use it in sauces, salsas, Asian foods, mix it with olive oil and use as a dip.\u00a0 The possibilities are unlimited.\u00a0 One down fall of garlic is that it can cause some really bad halitosis.\u00a0 Also if you eat a lot of garlic your sweat could have a garlic odor.\u00a0 I happen to like the smell of garlic but most people don&#8217;t.\u00a0 Garlic is hard to smell on other people when you yourself have been eating garlic so if you&#8217;re worried about the smell just make sure everyone else is eating it too.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_735\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSCF1039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-735\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-735\" title=\"DSCF1039\" src=\"http:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSCF1039-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSCF1039-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/karin.zmonkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSCF1039-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garlic growing in our garden<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I find garlic to be one of the easiest things to grow.\u00a0 My husband and I started growing garlic a few years ago and we have kept doing it since.\u00a0 We use garlic for so many things and it&#8217;s nice to always have fresh garlic around.
